About Quality Handloom Silk Co- Oprative Society Ltd. – Textile in Varanasi
Our society is based at No. J-27/28 in Jainpura, right on Chhohara Road. It’s a bit away from the main city noise, which suits the handloom work we do. Being a co-operative means there’s always a few different people around, and the atmosphere is more like a community than a standard office. The sound of the looms is the main thing you notice when you walk in. It’s a steady, rhythmic noise that goes on for hours. We work with silk, so the place is full of vibrant colors, even if the building itself is just plain brick and concrete. The road outside can get quite dusty, so we try to keep the windows screened to protect the yarn. It’s not a high-tech operation. Most of what we do is by hand, using skills that have been around for a long time. We have benches where people sit and work, and big wooden frames for the weaving. Sometimes we have meetings to discuss how things are going or to look at the new silk threads that have come in. There’s a sense of pride in the work, but we don't talk about it in a fancy way. It’s just what we do to make a living. The space is practical, with enough room for the looms and a small area for storing the finished pieces.
