Jagdish Prasad Makund Lal

Our shop is down on Chaman Sing Bag Road in the Barasari Zagir area. It’s been here for a long time and the name Jagdish Prasad Makund Lal comes from my family. The Chakphool Chakiya neighborhood is pretty busy these days but we just stick to our routine. We open up the shutters early when the sun is barely up. Inside it is a bit cramped with all the bags and ledgers piled up on the old wooden desks. We don’t have fancy air conditioning so we just use the ceiling fans that have been there forever. They make a lot of noise but they work. My nephew helps me with the heavy lifting and counting the stock. We write everything down in big red books because computers are too much trouble for us. Sometimes people stop by just to sit and have a cup of tea and talk about the weather. The road outside gets very dusty in the summer and muddy when it rains but we don’t mind it much. It’s just how things are here. We know most of the people who walk past our door. If you need something we usually have it buried somewhere in the back. It’s a simple way to run a business but it has worked for us for decades. We don't plan on changing anything soon. We just keep the lights on and do the work every day until it’s time to go home.
