Out here on Khergam Nava Road, things move a bit slower than in the big cities. Our office is right there in Khergam, and it’s basically just a room filled with filing cabinets and a couple of computers that have seen better days. We handle a lot of paperwork for people around here. It could be anything from helping someone fill out a form to figuring out some local regulation that’s confusing. The road outside is usually busy with tractors or bikes passing by, so there’s always a bit of dust coming through the door. We keep the door open most of the time so people can just walk in. There’s no formal reception desk or anything. You just come in, find a chair, and wait until one of us is free. We spend a lot of time on the phone, trying to get answers from government offices or other businesses. It’s frustrating sometimes, but that is the job. We know most of the people who come in by their first names because Khergam is a small place. We’ve been at this spot for quite a bit now, and the walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint. But we’re usually too busy with the files to worry about that. My tea always gets cold because I start talking and forget to drink it. It’s a plain, honest kind of work we do here every day, helping our neighbors get their business sorted out.
