Our place, Prayag Tex Print Pvt. Ltd., is sitting right in the middle of the 3rd Phase of Gidc in Vapi. If you know Vapi, you know it’s always humming with factories and people. We are at Plot No. 1206/1. Our floors are usually covered in some kind of ink or dye because we do a lot of textile printing here. It smells like chemicals and fabric most of the time, which you get used to after a week or so. We have these big printing machines that take up most of the space. They make a rhythmic thudding sound that you can hear from the street. The humidity in Gujarat can be tough, especially in the printing room, so we go through a lot of water and keep the fans on high. We are a mix of young guys learning the trade and older men who have been printing since before computers were common. Sometimes the colors don't come out exactly right the first time, and we have to spend hours tweaking the mix by hand. It is a lot of trial and error. The office part is just a small room with a couple of chairs and a dusty computer. We don't spend much time in there anyway. We are usually out on the floor making sure the fabric is feeding through correctly. It’s hard work, but seeing the finished rolls of cloth stacked up at the end of the shift feels okay for us. It keeps the business moving forward.
