Working out of Shed C-1/614 in GIDC Sarigam means you are surrounded by hundreds of other similar sheds. Sarigam Industries Association is part of this huge complex. Our particular shed isn’t very large, but we’ve managed to fit everything we need inside. There’s an office area that’s mostly just a wooden desk and a couple of metal cupboards full of files. The air always has a bit of a chemical smell from the factories nearby, but you stop noticing it after a while. We spend a lot of time on the phone or talking to the laborers who come by looking for work. The floor is painted grey, though most of it has chipped off over the years. We keep a small stove in the corner to make tea because the canteen is too far to walk to every time we need a break. The windows are high up and covered in grime, so the light is always a bit dim. We don't have any marketing people or a sales team. If someone needs something, they usually just walk in or call the number painted on the outside wall. It’s a very direct way of doing business. We keep track of the inventory by counting it manually every Friday afternoon. It’s a bit old-fashioned, but it prevents mistakes. The days go by fast when we have a lot of orders to fill. Sometimes the power flickers when the big plants nearby start their shifts.
