Popular Electricals is located at Plot No. 1222 in the Engineering Zone of the Gidc Estate. If you know Gidc, you know it’s a maze of warehouses and small factories. Our place is tucked in there among all the other workshops. Inside, it’s mostly rows of shelves filled with wires, switches, and all sorts of electrical parts that look the same to most people but are all different to us. We’ve got a small counter where we talk to folks who come in looking for a specific fuse or a length of cable. The lighting in the back isn't the best, so we often use a flashlight to find the smaller items. It’s a bit dusty because of all the construction nearby, but we try to keep the stock clean. We don't have a fancy website or a bunch of people in sales. It’s just us answering the phone and helping whoever walks in the door. The Gidc Estate can be a tough place to work during the monsoon when the roads get muddy, but we stay open regardless. We've spent a lot of years learning which parts work for which machines. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s what we know how to do. There's always a half-empty box of biscuits near the kettle and a stack of old ledgers on the desk. It’s just a normal, local business doing its thing every day and hoping the power stays on.
