Shree Shankar Vijay Timber Mart

If you come down to Plot No. 987-10a in the GIDC Industrial Estate, you'll find Shree Shankar Vijay Timber Mart. You can usually smell the fresh cut wood long before you actually see our sign on the gate. We have huge stacks of timber piled up everywhere, some of it under the tin shed and some just sitting out in the open air. It’s a bit of a maze of wood sometimes. We’ve been dealing with different types of timber for a long time, and it’s really the only thing we know well. The saws are incredibly loud when they are running, so we end up doing a lot of shouting just to be heard by each other. It’s definitely not the cleanest place in the world, with fine sawdust getting into everything, but that’s just how a timber mart is supposed to be. We don’t have a showroom or any fancy displays for people to look at. People just walk in, look through the stacks themselves, and tell us exactly what they need for their project. We cut things to size and help them load it up onto their trucks. It’s a very physical job and our hands are usually pretty rough and calloused by the end of the week. We actually like the smell of the wood. It’s a quiet business in terms of talk, but very noisy in terms of the actual work. We aren't looking to change much about it.
