Our work is mostly about taking old, worn-out tires and giving them a new surface so they can stay on the road longer. It’s a messy process involving a lot of rubber and heat. The smell is quite strong, but after working here for so long, we hardly notice it anymore. We spend our days handling heavy tires and operating the retreading equipment. Channi Naka is a good location for us because so many drivers pass by this way. We don't have a big staff, just a few of us who know the trade well. It’s a very manual job, and our clothes usually end up covered in black dust by noon. We have a small shed where we keep the tools and the rubber stock. It’s not the cleanest place in the world, but it’s where we get the job done. Sometimes people stop by just to ask for directions since we are right at the Naka. We just keep our heads down and work through the stack of tires that people leave with us. It’s a steady pace and we don't have much to complain about. The work is hard on the back but it's what we know how to do. We usually wrap things up when the street lights come on and the traffic starts to thin out a little.
