In Barkot, things move a bit slower than in the big cities down in the plains. Jahanvi Arkja Nidhi Limited is situated in Ward No.1, near the Nagar Palika Parishsad. Being here in Uttarkashi, we deal with a lot of mountain folks who work hard for every rupee. Our office is a simple place where we keep the records for the local members. It can get quite cold in the winter, so we usually have a small heater going while we work on the ledgers. People come in from the surrounding villages when they visit the town for supplies. They trust us because we are part of the same community. We don't use any big words or confusing terms. If someone wants to save, we show them how the passbook works and that’s that. It’s a very hands-on way of doing things. Sometimes the electricity goes out, which is common in the hills, so we keep a candle or a torch handy to finish the paperwork. We’ve been part of this ward for a while, and we know most of the faces that pass by the Nagar Palika office. It’s a modest operation, but it serves the people here well. We just take it day by day, making sure every entry is correct and every member is looked after properly. There isn't much more to it than that. We are just local people helping neighbors.
