Jai Shankar Chura Mill

If you're driving down NH-31, you'll see us right in front of the Bharat Petrol Pump. We are in Deogaon village, which is part of the Kanki post office area. It’s a busy spot because of the highway. There’s always trucks and cars passing by at all hours. Jai Shankar Chura Mill is where we spend our whole day. The sound of the mill is something you get used to after a while, though it’s pretty loud for anyone visiting. We work with rice to make chura, and it’s a process that doesn't really stop once we get going. Uttar Dinajpur is a place where people know their grain, so we have to be careful about what we produce. The dust from the mill gets everywhere, so we are constantly sweeping and cleaning. It’s not a glamorous job at all. We have a few local workers from Chakulia who have been with us for a long time. We eat our lunch together near the entrance and watch the traffic on the main road. Sometimes the machines break down and we have to fix them ourselves, which takes up a lot of time. We aren't a giant corporation, just a local mill trying to serve the community around here. It’s honest work and it keeps us busy from dawn till dusk. We just try to stay focused and keep the mill running smooth.
