Sirumalar Higher Secondary School

Our school, Sirumalar Higher Secondary School, is situated right on the Main Road in Andavoorani. It is an old building, and if you look closely, you can see where the walls have been patched up over the years. We have a lot of students coming from the surrounding villages, so the place feels very full during the day. I usually spend my time in the staff room, which is just a few tables and a lot of stacked paper. We do not have air conditioning, so we rely on the big ceiling fans that hum loudly and do not always cool things down as much as we would like. The Main Road outside can be quite busy with tractors and local buses, and sometimes the dust makes its way through the open windows. We have a small courtyard where the students gather for the morning assembly, and the sound of their voices carries quite far when it is still early. It is a very grounded kind of life here. We don't worry about being fancy or having the latest gadgets. We just make sure the books are there and the benches are in rows. On rainy days, the whole place smells like damp earth and wet umbrellas. It can be a bit chaotic when everyone is trying to stay dry, but we manage somehow. When the final bell rings and the students head back to the Main Road, the silence that follows is always a bit surprising.
