Our shop is right in the Durga Mandir Gali here in Rudrapur. It’s one of those narrow lanes where everyone knows everyone else’s business. We sell a bit of everything, from shiny bangles to different kinds of lipsticks and creams. The shelves are packed tight because the shop isn't very big at all. During the festivals, the lane gets so crowded you can barely move, and we stay open late because the temple brings in so many people. I spend a lot of time dusting the small boxes of jewellery because they get dirty so fast in this heat. It’s just me and sometimes a helper trying to keep track of all the little items. We have a small mirror for people to try things on, and the light is a bit yellow, which makes everything look a certain way. It’s not a big department store, just a local corner for the neighborhood women to find what they need for a wedding or a party. We talk a lot with the customers, mostly about local news or how the prices of everything are going up lately. Sometimes the cats from the street wander in and we have to shoo them out before they knock anything over. It’s a busy little life we have in this Gali. The bells from the Mandir are a constant background noise while we work through the afternoon.
