Gandhi Batteries & Inverter

Gandhi Batteries & Inverter is right across from the Nehru Hostel in Hiran Magri Sector 3. It is a pretty easy spot to pick out because we usually have a few heavy batteries sitting out front on the pavement. The shop is filled with rows of black boxes and those heavy inverter units that people need when the power goes out. A smell of lead and plastic hangs in the air, which is just part of the job. A lot of time is spent checking voltages and making sure cables are tight. It is not exactly clean work; our hands are usually stained with something by lunchtime. When the neighborhood loses power, that is when we get the most visitors. Everyone is looking for a way to keep their fans running or their lights on. There is no fancy waiting area with a TV or anything like that. People just stand around and talk while we test their old batteries or help them load a new one into their vehicle. It is a small shop, and sometimes it feels even smaller when a fresh shipment arrives. We have been in Sector 3 for a good bit now, and we know most of the people who live nearby. It is just a regular local business trying to help folks keep the electricity flowing when the grid is being difficult.
