Jyoti Brush Industries

Our workshop, Jyoti Brush Industries, is located over in Sarvritu Vilas. It’s a neighborhood that’s seen a lot of changes, but we’re still here making brushes like we always have. It’s a specific kind of work, dealing with bristles and handles all day. The building is an older one, so it has its quirks, like the squeaky door and the windows that don’t quite shut all the way. We’ve got boxes stacked up to the ceiling in some places. It’s not a high-tech factory. Most of the work is done by hand or with some old-fashioned machines that have a certain rhythm to them. You can hear the clicking and tapping from the street if the door is open. We don’t do much advertising. People mostly know us because they’ve been buying from us for years. We spend the mornings sorting through materials and the afternoons assembling everything. It’s a quiet enough existence. Sometimes the power goes out, and we just sit outside on the steps until it comes back. The light in Sarvritu Vilas is nice in the late afternoon. We aren't trying to change the world. We just want to make sure the brushes we put out are decent and that the orders get delivered on time. It’s what we know how to do, so we just keep at it. The neighbor’s dog usually barks when the courier arrives to pick up the daily shipments.
