Our place, Lakshmi Decors, is at 102, Dhanasekaran Nagar. It’s a pretty quiet neighborhood for the most part, which suits us just fine. We started out in a very small room and eventually moved to this spot to have a bit more breathing space for the materials. We don't do anything flashy here. Most of our day is spent looking at different fabrics or wood pieces and trying to figure out how they fit together. The walls are lined with samples and old tools that we still use even if they look a bit worn out. My cousin helps me out with the heavy lifting and the deliveries when we have them. We don't have a lot of staff, just a couple of people who have been with us since the beginning. The floor is usually a mess of thread and scraps by the time we go home. It’s just the way a workspace looks when you’re actually making things yourself. Sometimes the neighbors come by to chat, and we take a break to have some tea. It’s a local business in every sense of the word. We know most of the people on this street by name. We don't have a big marketing plan or anything like that. We just open the shutters in the morning and get to work on whatever is sitting on the bench from the day before.
