About Vinay Mini Rice Mill – Food & Beverages in Tumakuru
The mill is tucked away on 4th Cross, which is usually a busy little street during the harvest times. We have number 17, and you can usually hear the engines running from a block away. It gets quite dusty inside when the rice is being processed, so we spend a lot of time sweeping the floor and keeping the bags stacked neatly. Most people from around here bring their grain in small batches. We sit on the bench outside when the machines are cooling down. The neighborhood has changed a lot over the years, but the mill stays pretty much the same. We deal with farmers and local families who just want their rice sorted without any fuss. The 4th Cross gets narrow when trucks try to turn in, so there is often a bit of shouting and pointing to get them parked right. It is a noisy job, but it is honest work that keeps us busy from sunrise. We don't have a big office or anything like that. There is just a small desk where we keep the ledger and the keys. Sometimes the electricity cuts out and we have to wait around for it to come back so we can finish the batch. We have gotten used to the rhythm of the machines and the smell of the husks. It is just a small operation for the people living nearby and we like it that way.
