The Tamara

We are way out in the Kabinakad Estate, which is part of Yavakapadi Village in Madikeri. Being in the Kodagu District means we are surrounded by a lot of trees and hills. The air here is different than in the city; it’s damp and smells like earth and rain most of the time. The Tamara isn’t just a building; it’s spread out over the estate grounds. We spend a lot of our time walking between the different sections. The roads can be a bit bumpy and when it rains, everything turns into a bit of a muddy mess. It’s very quiet out here, except for the birds and the sound of the wind through the trees. We don’t have the same conveniences as a place in town, so we have to be pretty self-sufficient. If something breaks, we usually have to fix it ourselves. The village of Yavakapadi is small, so everyone knows everyone. It’s a slow life compared to what most people are used to. We don't have a polished lobby or a fancy entrance. You just arrive and you're in the middle of the greenery. The Tamara is just our corner of the estate. It takes a lot of work to keep the place going, especially with the weather being so unpredictable. We just take it one day at a time out here in Madikeri. The mist often rolls in during the late afternoon, making it hard to see more than a few feet.
