Down on South Street in Tirukkuvalai, you’ll find our small setup. Emas Engineers & Contractors Pvt.Ltd serves the Nagapattinam area, and it’s a different kind of pace out here in Tamil Nadu. The coastal air is nice, but it’s tough on the machinery, so we spend a lot of time cleaning and oiling our tools. Most of our work is local, helping with various construction and engineering needs in the surrounding villages. We know most of the people around here, and they know where to find us if they need a wall built or some drainage fixed. It’s not a big corporate operation. It’s just a few of us who know our way around a level and a shovel. We use a lot of local materials when we can, and we try to work around the heat of the afternoon by starting really early. There are days when the supplies don't arrive on the bus or the tractor, and we just have to find something else to do until they show up. It’s a quiet life but the work is hard. We don't have a website or anything like that; we just have our name on the gate and a phone that rings fairly often. People here value honesty, so we just tell them what can be done and how long it’ll take. That’s how we’ve kept going for this long. We just handle the engineering and the labor.
