We are out at Melnallathur Post. It’s a bit of a trek from the main city, but it’s a big site with plenty of room for everything we do. At Caterpillar India, the scale of things is what you notice first. Everything is heavy and built to last. The day usually starts with the sound of the gates opening and the staff arriving for the first shift. It’s a very structured environment because you have to be careful when you’re working with large equipment. We spend a lot of time in the workshop areas or out in the yard. The office part is functional, with rows of desks and plenty of blue-prints or manuals lying around. It gets quite dusty, as you might expect, especially when the wind picks up across the open spaces. We take our breaks in the canteen, which is where you really get to hear what’s going on with everyone. There’s a lot of talk about repairs, parts, and schedules. It’s not the kind of place where you’d wear a suit and tie; most of us are in work clothes or uniforms. We’ve been part of the Melnallathur community for a long time, and a lot of the people who work here live just a short distance away. It’s a steady, hardworking atmosphere where the focus is just on building things that work and making sure the day goes safely.
