Ambhikai Engineering Works

Our workshop is spread across a few units—I1, 2, 9, and 10—over in the Electronics Industrial Estate in Thuvapuri. It’s a bit of a spread-out setup, but it works for what we do. Engineering isn’t always clean or quiet, and our place shows that. There is always the smell of machine oil in the air and the sound of something being turned or ground down. We’ve been in this estate for a good while, so we’ve seen shops come and go, but we’re still here at Ambhikai Engineering Works doing the same basic stuff. It's a lot of manual work, making parts and fixing things that people bring in. The lights in the estate flick on early, and we’re usually already there getting the machines warmed up. We don’t have any big corporate slogans or anything like that. We just show up, look at the drawings or the broken parts, and try to figure out the best way to handle it with the tools we have. Some days are slower than others, which gives us time to clean up the metal shavings and organize the tool racks. It gets pretty humid here, especially in the middle of the day, but we’re used to it. The tea stall nearby is where most of our breaks happen, talking shop with the other guys from the estate. It’s a practical life, focused on getting the metal to do what it’s supposed to. We just keep our heads down and finish the work. It’s what keeps the lights on.
