The Modern Knit Garments

Our place is at No. 16/2 in Senguntha Puram, specifically on 8th Street. It is right off Karuvampalayam Mangalam Road. It is a busy area for textiles and garments, so there is always the sound of machines or trucks nearby. The Modern Knit Garments is where we spend most of our waking hours. We have a few sewing machines and some cutting tables. It’s not a large factory, just a decent-sized workroom where we handle various knitwear orders. My brother and I manage things together. We usually get to the shop around eight-thirty to start the machines and check the threads. The heat can be quite a lot in the afternoons, so we have a couple of fans running constantly. Most of our work comes from other businesses in the area who need specific pieces made. We don't really have a fancy office or anything like that. There is just a small corner with a table and chairs where we handle the paperwork and talk to visitors. The floor is usually covered in bits of fabric and thread by the end of the day. We sweep it all up before we head home to have dinner with our families. It’s hard work, and my hands are often tired, but it’s what we know how to do. We've lived in this neighborhood all our lives, so we know almost everyone who walks past the front gate.
