Sunrise Knitting Mills

Sunrise Knitting Mills is situated at No. 16 Bridgeway Colony Extension North. It’s a quiet enough area until you get close to our building. Then you can hear the knitting machines doing their thing. They make a rhythmic sound that you can almost feel in the floorboards. We have been at No. 16 for a long time. The building is older and has some character, like the creaky door at the side entrance. We work with a lot of different yarns and the colors are everywhere. Some days the floor is covered in blue scraps and the next day it might be red. We don't have a big front desk or a receptionist. If you come by, you usually have to find someone in the back among the machines. We are usually wearing our work clothes and have thread stuck to our shirts. That is just the way it goes when you are actually making things. We don't use a lot of fancy words to describe what we do. We just knit the fabric and make sure it’s the right weight and feel. Sometimes the tension on a machine gets wonky and we have to spend an hour or two tweaking it. It can be frustrating but that is part of the trade. We just keep the machines oiled and the yarn moving so we can finish the batches on time.
