Conch Knits

You can find us over on Harvey Road at Old No. 10, which is now New No. 16. We are right near the railway station, so we hear the trains whistling and rattling past all day and night. It’s a sound we have grown used to at Conch Knits. The building is one of the older ones on the street, with high windows and thick walls. We mostly do knitting work here, using different types of yarn and big knitting frames. The room is always humming with the sound of the needles moving back and forth. It’s a rhythmic noise that almost becomes like background music. We have large baskets filled with colorful wool scattered around the floor. Sometimes the dust from the yarn gets in your throat, so we keep the windows open for fresh air. Being so close to the station makes it easy for the staff to get here, but the traffic on Harvey Road can be a nightmare in the evenings. We don't have a fancy lobby or a receptionist. If you come by, you’ll probably just see one of us standing at a machine or checking a finished piece for dropped stitches. We are just a local group of people doing what we know how to do. The place is a bit cluttered with boxes and cones of thread, but that's just how a knitting unit looks.
