Sun Embroideries. 16 Padmavathipuram (East) Gandhi Nager. The machines run almost all day here, and you can hear the hum from the street if the door is open. Most of the time, the door is open because it gets quite stuffy inside when the sun hits the front windows in the afternoon. We have been in this spot in Gandhi Nager for a while now. It’s not a very big space, but it fits what we need. There are stacks of thread cones everywhere, mostly in bright colors that catch the light. You have to watch where you step sometimes because boxes are often sitting in the middle of the floor waiting to be sorted. The neighbors know us well, especially the tea stall guy who brings us rounds of chai when things get really busy. It’s a messy place, to be honest. There’s always lint or little bits of cloth on the ground, no matter how much we sweep. People stop by to ask about work or just to see what we are making that week. We don’t have fancy signs or anything like that. Just the work being done on the machines and the sound of the needles going up and down. Padmavathipuram is a quiet enough area most mornings, but by noon the traffic picks up outside. We just keep our heads down and get through the pile of work on the table. It’s a simple life here.
