If you come down to Royapuram, you’ll find us at 25 Susaiapuram Extension. It’s a bit of a maze back here in the streets. We have been in this building for years. You can hear the sound of the sewing machines the moment you turn the corner. It’s a constant humming sound that we’ve all gotten used to. We do garments, mostly stitching and packing. The space is filled with rolls of fabric in every color you can think of. Sometimes it’s hard to move around because of the piles of cloth. The windows are usually open to let in the breeze from the sea, but it still gets pretty humid inside. The workers here are mostly from the neighborhood. We all know each other’s families. It’s a very casual place, no one wears a suit or anything like that. We drink a lot of coffee during the afternoon break. The building is an old one, with blue paint that’s peeling in some corners. We don’t mind it much as long as the machines are running fine. There’s a small desk near the entrance where we keep the ledger books. We still write most things down by hand. It’s just easier for us that way. We don’t have fancy lunch rooms, everyone just sits together on the stools. It’s a simple life and we just keep busy with the orders that come in.
