We are Slm Garments, and our place is right at No. 10 College Road in Odakkadu. If you know where the HP Petrol Bunk is, we are just a short walk from there. It’s a handy spot because everyone knows the landmark. Our building isn't anything special to look at, just a plain storefront where we do all our sewing and packing. College Road gets quite busy with students and commuters, so there is always something going on outside our door. Inside, it’s mostly just us and the machines. We have shelves lined with different colored threads and boxes of buttons. We spend our time working on various garments, trying to get through the orders we have. It’s a lot of sitting and focusing on small details, which can be tiring for the eyes. We don't have fancy air conditioning, so we keep the doors open when we can to get a breeze. Sometimes the dust from the road gets in, but we just wipe it off and keep going. We aren't corporate people with suits; we usually just wear what's comfortable for working. Most of our day is spent talking about measurements and fabric types. We’ve been in Odakkadu for a good while and have seen the neighborhood change around us. Through it all, we’ve just stayed here at No. 10, doing the same kind of work we’ve always done. It’s a simple life but it keeps us busy and pays the bills.
