Mercury Clothing Company Pvt. Ltd. is situated at No. 37 Stanes Road, right on the 4th Street off Avinashi Road. It is a very busy part of town. You can hear the big trucks moving on the main road from where we sit. Our building is a sturdy one, built to handle the weight of the cloth and the machines. We have different floors for different parts of the job. Most days, the place is loud with the sound of the sewing machines going all at once. It is a rhythmic kind of noise that you get used to after a while. We have large windows, but they mostly stay shut to keep the dust from the street out. The air smells like new cotton and steam from the irons. We have rows of tables where the cutting happens. The staff is usually busy moving bundles of fabric from one side to the other. We eat our lunch together in the small break area in the back. It is a lot of repetitive work, but we stay on top of it. We don't use fancy computers for everything; a lot of the tracking is still done on paper clipped to the walls. When the power goes out, which happens sometimes, the whole place goes quiet and we just wait it out. It is a typical clothing factory environment where everyone knows their role and just gets on with the daily tasks of the business.
