Down here in A. K. Nagar, things are mostly about the work. We’ve been operating out of this spot in Seeyankadu for a good stretch of time. If you know Karumarampalayam, you know it’s a lot of people just getting on with their business. Our building isn't anything special to look at, just a place where we get the knitting done. The machines make a lot of noise throughout the day, so we’ve all gotten used to talking over the hum. We work with various yarns and keep the needles moving to hit our daily targets. Sometimes the power goes out, and we just sit and wait or do some packing while the sun is up. It gets pretty warm in the afternoons, especially when the machines have been running for hours. We mostly focus on basic knit items that people need. It’s not like those high-end fashion places you see in the city center. We deal with boxes and bags and shipping labels every single day. The floor is usually covered in little bits of thread that we have to sweep up before heading home. Most of the folks working here live close by, so we see the same faces every morning. It’s a bit of a walk from the main road, but people find their way eventually. We just keep the production going and try to stay organized among all the stacks of fabric. We aren't fancy, just hard workers making clothes.
