Gain Garments

Gain Garments is over at S.F. No. 10 in Shanmuga Nagar. We are tucked away in Samundipuram West, near the Gandhi Nagar Post area. It is a typical Tirupur neighborhood where you hear the hum of sewing machines from almost every building. Our place is no different. We have rows of machines and piles of fabric in various colors sitting around. The floor is usually covered in little bits of thread by the end of the shift. We start early when the air is still a bit cool before the afternoon heat hits the tin roof. It is not a glamorous setup, just a solid building where we get the stitching done. Most of the people working here have been with us for a long time. We know each other’s families and what’s going on in the neighborhood. We don’t really do big advertisements. Most of the work comes in because people know we are here in Samundipuram. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to wait a bit, but mostly we are just busy with the needles and the fabric. We keep the tea kettle going in the back for breaks. It is a simple life, focused on making clothes and getting them boxed up. The street outside is narrow, so it’s always a bit of a squeeze when the delivery vans come to pick up the finished garments at the end of the week.
