The shop is more of a small factory unit than a store. We have several machines that run throughout the day, making that steady clicking sound that fills the whole room. It’s quite a small space for all the work we do. Bags of yarn are often piled up near the entrance because there isn't much storage space. The floor always has bits of thread and lint on it, no matter how much we sweep. It’s just the nature of working with knits. I started this place with my brother and we do most of the heavy lifting ourselves. We don't have a receptionist or a fancy waiting area. If you come by, you’ll likely find us in our shirtsleeves working on the latest batch of fabric. The heat from the machines can be quite a lot in the summer, so we keep the big industrial fans going all day. It’s not a glamorous job, but it’s honest work. We spend our time checking the tension on the machines and making sure the fabric comes out smooth. Sometimes we have issues with the yarn quality and have to sort it out with the suppliers. It’s just part of the daily grind here at Chinna Thottam.
