Vaniyambadi is a place where everyone knows about leather. Our spot is on Cutchery Road Cross in Valayampet. If you come by, you’ll probably smell the processing work before you even see the sign for No. 58/2A. It’s a smell you get used to after a few days. We’ve been here in the Vellore district for a long time. It’s a dusty area and the roads are narrow, so getting vehicles in and out takes a bit of skill. The office is right next to where the work happens. It’s loud because of the machines and the people shouting to be heard over them. We don’t have fancy uniforms or a big reception desk. Most of us just wear whatever is comfortable for a long day of moving hides and checking quality. Sometimes the weather gets really dry and the dust gets everywhere, covering the files and the keyboards. We just wipe it off and keep going. It’s a family-type atmosphere even if we aren't all related. We’ve seen a lot of changes in the industry over the years but the way we work hasn't changed much. We focus on the leather and making sure the pieces are right. It’s honest work that leaves your hands a bit rough at the end of the shift. That’s just life in Vaniyambadi for us at Faisal Leathers and we wouldn't have it any other way for this business.
