Out here in Kattappana, things are a bit different because of the hills and the greenery. Neptune Ready Mix Concrete [P] Ltd. is located right at Anish Joseph’s place, the Thonakkara House in Uppukandam. It is a bit of a drive to get up here, but the air is decent. We spend most of our time dealing with the trucks and the cement mixers. You know how it is with ready mix, timing is everything or the whole load goes to waste. The guys are always checking their watches and shouting over the engine noise. It’s a lot of physical work. We get a lot of rain in Kerala, especially in this part, so we have to plan around the clouds most days. If it pours, everything slows down and we just wait it out under the tin roof. The office part is simple, just some desks and files tucked away. We don’t have any fancy receptionists or anything. Usually, someone is just washing off the slush from their boots before stepping inside. It’s a practical setup. We handle the paperwork, take the calls, and try to keep the machines from breaking down too often. It’s not a quiet job, that’s for sure. But the people working here have been around for a while and they know how to handle the heavy stuff without making a fuss about it. We just keep the mixers turning and get the work done as the days go by.
