Kuthampully Handloom Society

Over here at Kuthampully, near Thiruvilvamala, the sound of the looms is like a heartbeat for the whole village. Our society is located at Hind R 196, and it is a place where things have not changed much in a long time. We are not a big factory with machines doing all the work. It is real people sitting at the wooden frames, moving the shuttles back and forth. You can smell the starch and the cotton as soon as you walk through the door. There are bundles of yarn everywhere in different shades of white and gold. We spend our days making sure the threads are straight and the patterns are coming out okay. It is slow work, and you cannot really rush it without making a mistake. Some of the weavers have been doing this since they were kids, taught by their parents right here in Kuthampully. We sit together, share stories, and just keep the looms moving. Sometimes the light in the hall is not the best, so we have to squint a bit at the finer details of the borders. It is a quiet kind of life, mostly. We do not have fancy marketing or a big sales team. We just have the fabric we make and the community that stays here to do it. When a piece is finished, it feels good to see the result of all those hours of sitting and weaving.
