About Selvam Rice Mill – Food & Beverages in Thiruvarur
If you walk down Muniyappan Kovil Street in Sandaipet, you’ll probably hear our machines before you see us. Selvam Rice Mill is at number 681, right in the heart of the area. It’s a noisy job, and there’s always a bit of white dust in the air from the husks, but that’s just how a rice mill is. We’ve been processing grain for the local farmers and families for a long time. People bring their sacks in, and we get to work. It’s hard labor, especially in the summer heat, but it’s what we know. The building is old and has a lot of character, or at least that’s what I tell myself when the roof needs a bit of patching. We don't use any fancy computers to run things. We just know the machines and how they sound when they’re running right. Sandaipet is a busy market area, so there’s always a lot of shouting and carts moving around outside. We just stay focused on the work inside the mill. Sometimes people stop by just to chat while they wait for their rice to be ready. We’ve got a couple of old wooden benches for that. It isn’t a polished office or a showroom. It’s a working mill where things get a bit messy, but the rice comes out clean and that’s what matters to the people here. We just keep the wheels turning.
