Kalaimagaltanjore Tanjore Art

Down here in Nannilam Taluk, life moves a bit slower, which is good for the kind of work we do. Kalaimagaltanjore Tanjore Art is right on the Maruthuvancheri Main Road, near the Poonthottam area. It’s a traditional kind of place. We spend our days working with gold leaves, stones, and paints to make those classic Tanjore paintings. My hands are usually stained with some color or another by lunch. The workshop is filled with wooden boards and sketches. We follow the old ways of doing things, which means a lot of waiting for layers to dry. You can’t rush this kind of art. The main road outside gets a few buses and cycles passing by, but inside it’s mostly quiet except for the scraping of a tool or the sound of the radio playing in the corner. I started learning this from my elders, and now I’m the one sitting here every day. We don't have a fancy gallery. Most people just come to the house or the workshop to see what we're making. It’s a lot of sitting and focusing on tiny details, which can be hard on the eyes after a few hours. But seeing a finished piece with all that gold shining is worth the effort. It’s just what we do here in this part of the country, keeping the old ways alive without making too much noise about it.
