Down in Adiyakkamangalam, specifically in the Uapps area, you’ll find J M M School. It’s a quiet part of the world, and the school reflects that. We don’t have a huge gate or a security guard in a uniform. It’s just a building where the kids from the village and nearby areas come every day. The classrooms are basic, with windows that stay open to let the air in. Sometimes you can hear the goats or birds from the fields nearby while a lesson is going on. The floors are stone, and they stay relatively cool even when it’s burning hot outside. We have a small staff, and we all end up doing a bit of everything, whether it’s fixing a broken desk or helping out in the office. It’s not the kind of place you’d find in a big city. Everything here is a bit slower and more practical. We don’t have much in the way of decorations, just the things the students have made. The playground is just a patch of ground that gets a bit dusty in the summer. We’ve been here for a while, and the building shows its age in the cracks in the plaster and the faded paint on the doors. But it works for us. We just show up and do what needs to be done without much talk about the future.
