Sha School Of Dance

If you head down Udiyannur Kovil Road in Maruthumkuzhi, you’ll find our dance school. It’s not a big academy with a reception desk and fancy uniforms. We just have a decent floor and some speakers for the music. People from all over Thiruvananthapuram come here to learn. We have classes for kids who are just starting out and some for adults who want to keep moving. The room gets quite warm when everyone is practicing their steps, but we just open the windows and keep at it. You can often hear the beats from out on the street. We spend most of our evenings here, and the weekends are usually the busiest. It’s a simple setup. We don't have a lot of staff, just the instructors who show up and get the music going. Everyone leaves their shoes at the door and picks a spot on the floor. It’s a bit of a squeeze sometimes, but we make it work. Some people are here to learn traditional styles and others just want something more modern. We don't make a big deal out of things, we just focus on the rhythm and getting the movements right. Maruthumkuzhi is a busy area, but once the music starts, we’re just focused on the dance. It’s a good place for people who just want to learn without any extra fuss.
