National Cab

Our base is right along the Kovalam Bypass in Paruthikkuzhy, which is a pretty busy area of Thiruvananthapuram. We’ve been operating National Cab from this spot for a while, and most days are spent watching the traffic crawl by on the main road. It isn't a flashy office by any means. It’s basically just a room where we keep the car keys and take phone calls from people needing a lift. We have a few drivers who hang around between trips, drinking tea and talking about the road conditions. The bypass gets really jammed up during the mornings, so we’ve learned all the back alleys to avoid the worst of it. Keeping the cars clean is a bit of a struggle because of all the dust from the road, but we do what we can with a bucket and some rags. We don't have any big corporate goals or anything. We just want to make sure we get people where they need to go, whether it’s the airport or just down to the beach. Sometimes the phones ring off the hook and other times it’s dead quiet for hours. We’ve got an old map pinned to the wall that’s seen better days, but it still helps when someone mentions a street we haven't heard of. It’s just a normal, local taxi business trying to keep things moving. We’re usually here late into the evening.
