Our business is located over in Avadi, at number 13 on Bharathi Street in Thiruvalluvar Nagar. We deal with edible oils and snacks, so our place usually smells like something is being fried or prepared. It’s a very distinct smell that stays on your clothes long after you leave the building for the day. The neighborhood is mostly residential, so it’s a bit quieter than the center of Chennai, but we still have plenty of activity. We have a small area for production and another part for storage. It’s a family-style environment where everyone knows their job and just gets on with it. We spend a lot of time checking the oil and making sure the snacks are packed properly so they don't get soggy in the Chennai humidity. The kitchen area gets really hot, as you can imagine, so we are always drinking water and trying to stay cool under the fans. We’ve been at this for a while and have seen the area change, but our routine stays pretty much the same. We wake up, get the heat going, and start the day’s work. There are no fancy uniforms here, just people in practical clothes doing manual work. It’s a lot of lifting heavy containers and moving boxes around. We just want to do our work well and get the products out the door. It’s a simple life of making snacks and managing the oil supply for the local area.
