Surya Electrical And Hardware is at Shop No-65/1 on Sadras Road. We are very close to the fish market, so you can definitely smell the catch of the day when the wind blows the right way. The shop is full of all sorts of things like wires, switches, hammers, and pipes. It’s a bit of a maze inside because we try to fit as much as possible onto the shelves. I know where everything is, even if it looks like a mess to someone else. If you need a specific type of screw or a certain length of wire, I usually have to dig through a few bins to find it. Sadras Road gets a lot of traffic, especially in the mornings when the market is at its busiest. We get a mix of people coming in—electricians looking for parts and local residents who just need a new light bulb. I spend a lot of time standing behind the wooden counter. There’s a small radio that I keep on for some background noise, mostly playing local stations. The ceiling fan is old and wobbles a bit, but it keeps the air moving. When it rains, the water splashes up from the road right to our doorstep. We have to keep the hardware dry, so we’re always moving things back from the entrance. It’s a busy little corner of the world here. Sometimes I stay late just to reorganize the boxes after everyone has gone home.
