Out here in Malaiyandi Patinam, near Seelakkampatti, the air is usually full of the sound of construction. Bakiyam Steels And Cements is right in the middle of it. We spend our days surrounded by rebar, piles of bricks, and heavy bags of cement. It’s hard, physical work and our clothes usually show it by lunchtime. We don't have a polished showroom. It’s a yard and a storage space where we keep the supplies that people need to build their homes and shops. Most of our customers are local builders or guys working on their own houses. They come in, we talk about what they need, and we load up their vehicles. Sometimes the weather makes things difficult, like when the rain turns the yard into mud, but we still get the deliveries out. We aren't interested in being a fancy corporate entity. We are just local people providing the basic materials for growth in our village. My brothers and I run the place, so it’s a tight-knit operation. We know who is building what down the road. It’s a good feeling to see a house go up and know that the steel in the foundation came from our yard. We keep it honest and we keep it moving, day in and day out, without any unnecessary fluff.
