P A S Modern Rice Mill

Our mill is at 8 A, Nk Street, over in the Palam area of Thanjavur. It’s an old-fashioned part of town, and the streets around here are a bit narrow for the big trucks, but we manage. The building itself is quite tall to fit all the processing equipment inside. We have various floors where the rice moves through different stages. It gets very hot in the afternoons, especially near the drying sections. Thanjavur is known for its heat, and the metal roof of the mill doesn't help much. We keep plenty of water around and take breaks when the machines are being serviced. On Nk Street, the neighbors are used to the sound of the mill running through the day. We spend a lot of time cleaning the filters and making sure the grain flows smoothly through the chutes. There’s a lot of manual labor involved, lifting and stacking and hauling. Our office is just a corner with a wooden table and a few stools. We keep the doors open to catch whatever breeze comes through Palam. It is a busy life, and there is always something that needs fixing or adjusting. We don't spend money on fancy decorations; we just keep the equipment running. It’s a plain, hardworking place where we do our jobs and try to stay out of the sun.
