We run the operations for Colt Engineering out of an apartment unit, specifically 204 L in the Pancheel Appt. building. It’s a bit different than having a big industrial factory, but it works fine for the kind of design and technical work we handle. The main living area has basically been turned into our primary office. There are cables running across the floor and several extra monitors set up on some old wooden tables we found. It’s usually pretty quiet in here, unless we are testing some equipment or the phones start ringing. We don’t have a receptionist at the front door. If someone rings the bell, one of us just gets up and answers it. We drink a lot of tea and coffee while we look at blueprints or fill out spreadsheets. Sometimes we have to head out to actual project sites to see how the machines are performing, but most of the heavy thinking happens right here in the apartment. It’s nice because the commute is very short for us. The other people in the building know us as the guys who are always working late into the night. We don’t really use brochures or anything like that. We just talk to people who have engineering problems and try to help them find a practical solution. It’s a small operation, but we manage to stay pretty busy throughout the week.
