Kailash Steel Centre

We are over at Plot 216, Shop 1 in the Snehal building in Kandivali East. It’s a small shop packed with all kinds of steel items. You can hear the metal clinking every time someone moves something. We have pots, pans, and big containers stacked on every shelf. The floor is a bit uneven and the shelves are made of heavy iron. People from the nearby apartments come in looking for things for their kitchens. It’s usually just one or two of us working here at a time. We spend a lot of time dusting the steel because it shows every fingerprint. The shop is right on the ground floor, so it’s easy for people to stop by. Sometimes it’s hard to find exactly what a customer asks for in the back, but we usually have it somewhere. We keep our records in a simple notebook and don't use a computer for much. It gets pretty warm in here during the summer months. We don't have a big display window, just the door open to the street. It’s a steady kind of job, selling basics that everyone needs. We’ve known some of the families in Kandivali for a long time. There is always a lot of clatter when we get a new shipment in and have to find space for it all. We just keep stacking things up until the ceiling is nearly reached in the back room.
