About Wall Hanging Nettipattam – Art & Craft in Thalassery
We work out of a small space here in Wayanad. If you know the area, it’s quiet and green, which is nice for when we are putting things together. We make these traditional nettipattam pieces by hand. It takes a lot of time and sometimes my eyes get tired from looking at the small details for too long. We don't have a big factory or a bunch of machines. It’s mostly just us sitting on the floor or at the old wooden table. The materials are spread out everywhere. Sometimes the glue gets on the table and we can't get it off, but that's just how a workshop looks. We started doing this because it was something we knew how to do with our hands. People around here sometimes stop by to see what we are working on. We don't have a showroom with fancy glass. The finished hangings usually just hang on the wall until someone takes them home. It’s a slow process. You can’t rush this kind of work or it looks wrong. Wayanad is a good place to be for this. The air is fresh and it stays relatively calm. We don't do much advertising. Mostly people just hear about us from their neighbors or see a piece in someone's house. We just keep making them one by one. It's a way to keep the tradition going without making a big fuss about it.
