National School is located on the Vallam Sencottai Road in the Vallam area of Shencottah. It’s right on the way to the border, and the scenery around here is actually quite nice with the hills in the distance. The school itself is a straightforward place. We have a gated compound where the students spend their time between 9:00 and 4:00. It’s a lot of local kids from Vallam and the surrounding small villages. You can hear the mix of languages during break time, though classes are mostly conducted in a more formal way. We don't have fancy air conditioning or anything like that; we just rely on the breeze coming through the windows. The desks are a bit old, but they serve their purpose. Our teachers come from the nearby towns and they know most of the parents personally. It makes things easier when we need to talk about a student's progress. We have a small playground that gets a lot of use during the lunch hour. It’s not a very quiet place once the kids are out of their seats. We stick to the routine of daily lessons and the occasional local festival celebration. It’s just a regular school for the community here in Shencottah. We don’t make a big fuss about things, we just try to make sure the kids are learning what they need to know for their futures.
