If you walk down the Main Road in Veerakeralampudur, you’ll find us at number 6/75. Ganesh Store has been here for a while now, and the building shows it a little bit. The paint on the front is peeling in a few spots from the sun. We open up early, usually before the sun is fully up, to get the front cleared and the goods displayed. It’s a narrow shop, so we have to be careful how we stack the bags and boxes so people don't trip. Most of our customers are just people from the neighborhood who we’ve known for years. We know who wants what before they even ask. The wooden counter has a lot of scratches on it from years of coins and bags being slid across. We don't use a computer for everything; there is still a big paper ledger where we write things down. When the rains come, the roof leaks a tiny bit near the back door, so we have to move the rice bags away from that spot. It’s just me and a couple of others helping out. We spend a lot of time just talking to whoever walks in about the local news or the price of vegetables. It’s not a fancy supermarket, just a local store where things are simple. We like the routine of it all and the way the street feels in the evening when the lights come on.
