Marble Market

Down here in Nimtouri, in the Purba Medinipur district, you’ll find our place called Marble Market. It’s not as big as the name might make it sound, but we have a good variety of stone sitting in the yard. We deal with both marble and granite, depending on what people are looking for. The weather can get really hot here, so working out in the yard under the sun is pretty tough some days. We try to get most of the heavy lifting done early in the morning before it gets too unbearable. Our yard is a simple setup with rows of slabs standing up against the supports. We don’t have a computer system or anything; we just keep track of everything in a notebook and by looking at the stacks. People from the surrounding villages come to us because they know we’ve been here a long time. It’s a lot of manual work, cleaning the stones and showing the veins and colors to the customers. We don't use any fancy sales talk. If a piece looks good to someone, they buy it. We just make sure it’s loaded safely onto their transport. It’s a quiet life for the most part, except for the sound of the stone being moved or the occasional truck. We just focus on keeping the yard organized and helping whoever walks through the gate. It's just a regular local shop where we work hard and try to be fair with everyone.
