Arihant Trading Co.

The Market Yard in Vadhavan is a loud place to be, especially early in the morning when all the traders are getting started. Arihant Trading Co. is at No. 1, so we are right in the middle of all that action. There is always a lot of dust in the air and the sound of people shouting across the yard. We spend a lot of time on the phone or checking the weights on the scales. It’s not the kind of job where you wear a suit. We wear clothes that we don't mind getting a bit dirty. The floor is usually covered in bits of burlap or spilled grains, and we sweep it up when we can. Surendra Nagar gets very hot, so we have a couple of old fans that creak while they spin. It’s a simple business. We buy things, we sell things, and we try to keep the books straight. There are no fancy computers doing everything for us; we still rely on our eyes and our hands to make sure things are right. We know the other traders by name and we often share a quick meal in the afternoon when things quiet down. It’s a traditional way of doing things, but it’s worked for us so far and we don’t see a reason to change how we work. It’s just about being here every day.
