If you head over to Adajan Dn, you'll find us at Sarjan Shree Academy Of Bharatnatyam. It's a place where the sound of wooden floors and bells is pretty much constant. I've always loved dance, and setting this place up was just something that felt right for this part of town. We aren't a big fancy studio with mirrors on every single wall, but we have enough space for the students to move and learn the steps properly. Bharatnatyam is tough, and it takes a lot of hours of just standing in the same position until your legs ache. We see a lot of young students coming in after school, still in their uniforms sometimes, ready to practice. The Adajan area is quite lively, so there’s always something happening outside, but once the music starts, everything else kind of fades away. We don’t really do much advertising or anything like that. Most people just hear about us from their neighbors or friends. It’s a very local feel here. Some days the humidity makes the floor a bit sticky, and we have to wipe it down constantly, but that’s just part of the routine. We focus on the tradition and making sure the kids understand the movements. It’s a simple life, teaching and practicing, but it keeps us busy and connected to the culture here. It is just a small space for big dreams.
